Do You Have a Target for Your English Listening Practice?

Your English friends may often use a modified English to speak to you. They might not even know it, but they often change their English for you. It is easier than repeating thing again. Besides, they probably don't remember the exact words they said the first time. They might even use English like yours sometimes to make conversations smoother.

You have studied English for quite some time, and you can hear lots of individual words. But you still often can't understand it. You have trouble understanding movies or TV even though they seem to be using easy words. You can understand your friends but not movies or TV.

Waxing Your English for Better Understanding

The English you listen to has some rought points, like a surfboard without wax. You can't wax the entire surfboard at one time. You wax one part of the board at a time.

Just like surfing, when you wax the English you listen to, it can slide better. Then it glides right into your ears, clear easy-to-understand English.

But, you can't wax a surfboard all at once. And like a surfboard, you can't wax your English all at once. You need to wax one part of it at a time.

You can practice with a focused listening program. A program that has a clear and easy target each time you sit down to practice. A program that you can practice in just a few minutes each day.

No more confusion. No more hoping. This program will make you a better listener when you practice daily on each phrasal verb target.

Phrasal Verbs..?

Not everyone knows what phrasal verbs are; they are simple English words that go together to make a new meaning. They are not always easy. They are not easy because their meaning is difficult to guess just from the words alone.

I can't understand phrasal verbs!

boy blowing dandelions

Up is up and blow means blow. Good. So what does 'blow up' mean, and how is it different from blowing air above your head?

boy blowing dandelions

How about an airplane that 'takes off', or 'A friend that you run into'? Welcome to the strange world of phrasal verbs. These verbs don't have a meaning that is equal to the meaning of the two words they are made from. Sometimes the meaning is very different. That is frustrating after you have studied so many words!

But with this program, you will not have to guess. You can study the meanings in a clear focused way. Then you will practice listening to these verbs so you can recognize them when you hear English speakers.

Take the phrasal verb 'blow up', for instance. It sounds easy, right? Blow is simple, and the word up is even easier. but when they are put together they have quite a different meaning. They mean to expode. But there is still a small problem.

And the Problem is...

And the problem is you cannot always know what a phrasal verb is just from listening to it. You need to be taught phrasal verbs. You need to study phrasal verbs. You need to practice listening to them. Then you will change puzzling English into clear strings of words.

Puzzles and Strings

Spoken English is more like a string than a puzzle. A puzzle is easier to solve when you use your eyes. You can move the pieces about. You can rearrange them.

But you can't do this when you are listening.

Spoken English is more like a string. You cannot move any pieces about, and you cannot see them. Your eyes are not much use to you. In fact, you may as well shut your eyes when you are listening to the stories on this course. You can focus better on the sounds.

I made my phrasal verbs listening course so you can do that: close your eyes and listen to the stories. In fact, that is one of the secrets to increasing your listening power: close your eyes.

You will find many other small ideas on this course that will help you become a much better English listener.

But the Strings Change

But one problem with listening to the strings is that they change. What I mean is, the verbs do not always sound the same. They are different in the past and the present. 'Blow' changes to 'blew' or sometimes even 'blown' and they all sound a bit different.

Or how about a very basic verb, like 'go'? It changes to 'went' and even to 'gone' sometimes. Will that be a problem?

No.

You don't have to worry about that on this course. I already did that for you. I put in different forms of the verbs. You can practice listening to them and learn them completely.

But the Strings Change (II)

These strings of spoken English words change in other ways, too. They change their sounds when certain other words are around them. One example is the word 'him'. The 'h' sound often disappears on this word. If you put it beside the phrasal verb 'set up' then you get 'set him up'. The problem is, it sounds more like 'seddim up' and that can confuse any non-native speaker!

But I put these forms into my stories. It did that so you could get the best practice listening of all. You will not be surprised when you listent to natural English after you practice listening to the stories in this course.

The Best Part is...

And the best part is, I included the scripts for you! Of course, I recommend you don't read the scripts before you listen. In fact, I say you should practice in four practice sessions without looking at the scripts.

Remember them Better

Then in the fifth practice session, you listen to the story and read the script at the same time. That way, you don't quite learn the wrong thing, but you maximise your need (and desire!) to learn the correct forms. And you remember them better.

"But What If I Don't Understand?"

Well, to be honest, you probably will not understand the stories when you begin listening to them...if you did, you wasted your money! But with my tips on how to study and practice listening, along with the scripts for each and every story, you will be on your way to understanding everything with a little regular practice.

"But What If It's Too Fast?"

It will be too fast for most students at the start. I read the stories at a moderate speed but even that is too fast for many students. So I included a slow version of the story for you to get easier practice with. With the slow version, and the regular version and regular practice you will find it easy to listen to before you know it.

"But What If I Don't Have Time?"

None of us have time. Even as I write this, I just finished my 6 minutes of Spanish practice. I'll be the first to admit that I don't always practice everyday, but when I practice I try to practice for a short period.

That's because short periods of practice are more effective than longer ones. If you do the same, you can always keep up the practice. After all, 6 minutes isn't impossible. And daily practice is the most important.
